HSPcomplete CPU Usage Reporting Madness

I do have a Virtuozzo VPS hosted in Melbourne, and the hosting company provides HSP complete control panel for me to login and view and change my account details. The column on the left also reports the resource usage of your VPS, showing you total traffic, amount of disk space, and the current “CPU usage”.

As you can see my VPS is currently using up 53% of CPU resource, out of 100% that is available. No wonder why my VPS feels so slow. However, when I actually jumped onto the VE and have a look, my processes weren’t using much CPU at all! vmstat shows my user and sys has always been under 5% combined (and under 2% most of the time). Type in upload shows that it is my 1 minute load average that is hovering around 0.5. HSP complete just conveniently interpreted to end user that VPS has used 50% of CPU resource, without trying to explain what load average is. That’s mad.

This is one of the best reverse ip tools I have ever seen. Most reverse ip tools do not show you nearly all the sites hosted on a server and sometimes there users are even charged for a premium service to use the full tool. At first, I thought it was capable of actually displaying all domains hosted on a server. However, it doesn’t because I checked one of my servers and it got only 3 out of 7 domains on ip address. But, in other cases it seems to list a long list of domains hosted on a server. Over at digg.com, users are having fun poking around on government and scientology sites to see what domains are hosted.

There seems to be some connectivity issue with regarding to my VPS at Web24 (profiled at VPS AU here) right now. For my websites hosted there, the heading will load, and then part of the content, and then the browser will just stall there trying to fetch the rest of the page but they never arrive.

Web24 is coloc at Fujitsu data centre in Melbourne, and a quite traceroute check with mtr shows around 20-40% packet loss at Fujitsu data centre.

I have posted the same issue on Whirlpool Forums and so far we have got no response from the provider. Web24.com.au and their HSPcomplete panel are hosted inside the same network thus neither are working at the moment. I can’t even get onto the support page to get the contact details (lucky there is Google cache).

Not happy Jen. Have to wait and see… Maybe it is a sign that I need to go to sleep now :)

Update 9AM AEST 27 Feb

I got a reply back from Web24 support this morning detailing the communication between Web24, Fujitsu and their up stream providers. Great job! Some paraphrased details:

• Packet loss issue identified at 10:15pm on 26 February, and later found out it was an upstream router issue.


• Web24 has been working with Fujitsu and Verizon in identifying and resolving the issue, and by 1:18am 27 February, the main web24 site failed over to US network (very good idea).


• All the traffic are routing through secondary links by 4:45am, and still waiting for feedbacks on primary provider.

Pingdom still reports my site was down until around 8:20am. This is the graph generated from Cacti:

Note that the network does not appear to be down from 10pm onwards because the querying packets are small enough to get through. I guess network connectivity is going to be patchy this morning.

At the same time, there are a number of outside-world developments that folks in the hosting business ought to keep an eye on.

1. On Wednesday, in addition to officially releasing RHEL5, Red Hat announced that it will soon launch an open source marketplace called Red Hat Exchange (RHX). As Business Week reports, Red Hat will guarantee the compatibility of RHX products with its platform AND provide tech support for each and every 3rd party product on the exchange. In addition, RHX will allow end users to submit ratings, read reviews and compare notes.

2. Later that afternoon, Microsoft said it will buy Tellme Networks. The Associated Press thinks the deal is worth $800 million to $1 billion.

3. Less than a day later, Cisco announced that it has agreed to acquire WebEx for $3.2 billion (or $2.9 billion, if you deduct WebEx's $300 million cash balance).

4. And last but not least Google sort of confirmed that it's working on a mobile phone.

It's a Wal-Mart-ized web; every Big Co wants to assemble a broader range of more seamlessly integrated products for a wider and better networked audience. This leaves less and less of a market for old school vendors who sell standalone widgets to isolated prospects.

For instance, consider 1&1's recent survey of 765 small business owners. Andreas says 100% of the respondents agree that the absence of a company website is bad for sales, but there's much more to these customers' operations beyond setting up a web presence. Might they not benefit from Zoho or ThinkFree powered productivity apps? SharePoint based collaboration? CRM?

More importantly, Andreas counts "hundreds of thousands of US small businesses" among his customers. As such, one super valuable feature that he's uniquely positioned to deliver is a 1&1 social network through which customers can connect with potential vendors, partners and buyers. I feel like 1&1 is really missing out by amassing a sizable community without leveraging it for its members' benefit.

The problem:
A few months ago we noticed that after updating either Virtuozzo or OpenVZ utilities, we would no longer be able to reboot Redhat 7 virtual environments (VEs - or VPS virtual private servers]).

We tracked this down to the fact that Virtuozzo and OpenVZ have the code:

CP='/bin/cp -f --preserve=mode,ownership'

in the files: dists/scripts/redhat-add_ip.sh & dists/scripts/functions

The above scripts are executed in the VEs to setup networking - the problem is that RedHat 7 supports only 'cp --preserve' and not 'cp --preserve=...' and therefore the startup scripts can't run and setup networking in the VEs.

The Solution:
The solution is easy:

Just modify: dists/scripts/redhat-add_ip.sh & dists/scripts/functions (in /etc/vz for OpenVZ or /etc/sysconfig/vz for Virtuozzo) and remove the "=mode,ownership" text. That will fix it.

Important: You must manually make the above changes after any time that Virtuozz or OpenVZ releases a new version of the virtuozzo tools because they will override this.

(update) Bug Report submitted to OpenVZ:
We opened a bug report with OpenVZ and they've responded, however we're unsure if they will fix it - we asked for clarification but we've received no response.
